Roots Organic Brewing Company. Roots is the First Certified All Organic Brewery in Oregon. Founded in March of 2005, Roots produces handcrafted herbal and traditional brews in a Pacific Northwest style. Craig Nicholls did his internship at Rogue Brewing Co. with the best of the best, John Maier. Gaining brewing experience at a variety of Oregon breweries, Nicholls got his first opportunity as a head brewer at the Alameda Brewhouse in the summer of 96, and gained wide recognition for his alchemical and organic brews that included roses (Spring Rose Doppelbock), juniper branches (Juniper Porter), and sage (Zeppelin Sage Fest Bier), among other odd infusions. Nicholls was the first brewer in Oregon to do Organic Brews on a commercial level, which started with the Heather Ale back in 1996.
Roots earns its income both from an in-house brewpub, restaurant and from wholesale sales of its beer. Roots’ brews can currently be found in bars and restaurants across the state of Oregon, Washington and in grocery stores in Oregon, Idaho, California, and Alaska. Through their Oregon distributor, Maletis Distributing Company, and the instinctive salesmanship of Nicholls, the company has been able to earn shelf space at New Seasons, Whole Foods, Wild Oats grocery stores, QFC, Fred Meyers and many other beer specialty stores throughout those states.
Like most Portland business’s, Roots is family run. Craig and his wife Jeannie, With the help of “Uncle” Jim, mom, dad and brothers have created a Brewpub with a vibe that’s, warm, and family friendly. Roots offers it’s space to local artists, for monthly art shows and local musicians, for weekly music. The premise for Roots is to be a gathering place, a place where one can share a pint and Great food and have great conversations with friends.
With a commitment to excellence, sustainability, and community, We at Roots are dedicated to doing our part in preserving our planet and being an industry leader for Innovative, Cutting Edge Brewing. Organics are foods produced without the use of chemicals or pesticides. We use only the finest Organic or Natural products, including growing most of our organic produce throughout the summer for use in our Pub!
We are committed to Sustainable Business Practices, including, buying locally and using organic ingredients when ever possible. By supporting Organic Farming, we help provide a healthier way of living for both us and the planet. Roots’ Recycling and Composting program has reduced our trash output by 98%. We also use all Recyclable and Biodegradable products, such as our take out containers, napkins, and other paper products, from kitchen, pub, to office. For events we use Cornstarch, Biodegradable utensils, plates and cups. We only use Certified Organic, Green Friendly Chemicals in our Brewery as well. We built our pub and bar with all Reclaimed materials, in fact all the wood used on the bar and surrounding the Pub is from a couple of 100 year old, Portland houses that were deconstructed. Roots will continually strive to craft only the finest Organic and Herbal Beer, and serve up the finest Organic and natural foods. And Remember;
